Define Word Firefox Extension v0.6.0

The Define Word plugin has been upgraded to work with Firefox v1.5: Define Word v0.6.0.

At the same time, I also added the ability to choose whether the tab should be foreground or background, and changed the way UTF-8 search strings are dealt with.

A number of other changes will have to wait until a later version, and I have had lots of ideas from everyone. Some of the things I would like to do when I get the time:

  • Allow the user to specify a default lookup
  • Add a hotkey to launch the default lookup
  • Add an option to specify how UTF-8 should be dealt with
  • Allow the result to be shown in a mouse-over hint instead of in a new tab/window. I tried this ages ago, and it’s quite hard to get it to work well, which is why it isn’t there today.
  • Make it work in Thunderbird. This is probably simple, but I have not been able to find out how to do it 🙂

Have you got other suggestions?

  1. A great tool!! However I would like to have the same setup on different computers. Is there a way to ex-/import the settings?

  2. Supposedly a very useful extension, but for some reason doesn’t work for me; downloaded with default options, window pref: open in new foreground tab; selecting a word of text and clicking ‘look up definition’ an a dictionary –> nothing happens. Is it possible that other extensions in use (I have several) can cause this? Perhaps you could give a piece of advice. I have Ffox 1.5 and Win XP Pro SP 2. Thank you.

  3. I wanted to upgrade my FireFox so I downloaded and installed Firefox 1.5.0.3 and this extension was disabled by the install program. I tried to update the extension but it was not compatible and would not work. I reinstalled Firefox 1.0.7 and the extension works again. I like this tool and use it quite a lot.

  4. I updated to Firefox 2.0. I love it but I miss Define Word. Will you be updating it for Firefox 2.0? I hope you consider it. Thanks in advance.

  5. Yes, I intend to upgrade it to Firefox 2.0 – sometime in the next month or so. I have just moved and my PC is not yet connected so I can’t work on it 🙂
